AUSTRALIANS with obesity are at significantly higher risk than previously thought of suffering illness, including diabetes, heart attack, stroke and osteoarthritis, a new study has found.

The reassessment of obesity’s impact in Australia found that 600,000 more patients are suffering these diseases because of obesity than was estimated in 2006.

Even low-level exposure to arsenic in drinking water appears to be associated with increased prevalence of type 2 diabetes, researchers said in a study published Tuesday.

Millions of people across the world consume drinking water containing arsenic from inorganic sources, said the researchers in the August 20 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

More people are being diagnosed with diabetes in Devon as figures for obesity continue to grow.

The latest figures from the Devon Primary Care Trust for diabetes show 27,657 sufferers in the county, compared to 25,667 the previous year. This is an increase of nearly eight per cent in a year.

Currently there are 3,805 people in Exeter diagnosed with diabetes.

MONDAY, July 28 (HealthDay News) — Packing on the pounds by drinking too many sugary drinks and not eating enough fruits and veggies appears to be associated with increased risk for type 2 diabetes, while a low-fat diet doesn’t alter your risk of developing the blood sugar disease.

That’s the conclusion of three studies published in the July 28 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine. Obesity is one of the strongest risk factors for developing diabetes. By 2030, 11.2 percent of the adult population in the United States is expected to suffer from type 2 diabetes, according to the journal report.
